HSC Foundation
Kingsbury has a strong partnership with The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation which has helped fund several projects including our Career Investigation for Transitioning Youth Program (CITY). The CITY Program is a partnership between Kingsbury Day School and George Washington University in which 11th and 12th grade students explore various career fields on GWU campus and subsequently can participate in paid summer and school year internships in those fields. Additionally, HSC funded the creation of the brochure “Partnering with your Child’s School: A Guide for Parents – Information and Resources for Families of Children with Learning Disabilities.” Please feel free to visit their homepage at www.hscfoundation.org. -posted 7.15.08 at 1:06 PM

At Kingsbury Day School, we know that the best education includes parents and guardians. Parent involvement is an important and welcome facet of KDS life. We as educators can do our jobs better when there is consistent communication between home and school. Parents are encouraged to participate in KDS activities as volunteers. Parent participation enhances student life, builds a strong sense of community, and supports students' educational experiences.
Opportunities abound throughout the school year for parents to participate in the life of the school. You may volunteer to be a room parent or participate in special activities or in-classroom projects. Kingsbury Day School parents may also serve on committees with families who receive services from Kingsbury's other divisions. Several current and former KDS parents serve on Kingsbury's Board of Trustees.
Open communication among parents, teachers, administrators and other professionals is essential to a child's optimal progress. Parents and teachers regularly exchange information about factors that may affect a child's functioning in school. In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Kingsbury sends home quarterly updates of each student's progress toward the goals specified in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Written reports are also sent home twice yearly, in January and June, to keep parents informed about their child's progress. Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled in November and IEP conferences are held throughout the spring.
Our teachers welcome information via telephone or in-person conferences at any time. Additional conferences, including those with other faculty members or administrators, can also be scheduled to address particular issues. Parents are encouraged to call teachers, administrators or counselors at any time to discuss ideas, concerns or suggestions. Teachers of younger children maintain a daily notebook as a means of exchanging information about the school day.
Parenting is one of the most difficult and rewarding jobs out there. Parenting a child with a learning disability holds its own unique set of challenges and rewards. Kingsbury recognizes this and works to help parents develop strategies for coping during the trying times and celebrating their child's successes. Often just gathering with other parents who are going through the same issues and who understand your frustrations and worries is the best help. Therefore, Kingsbury organizes monthly support groups for parents of early childhood, elementary, middle and upper school students as an opportunity for parents to share their experiences and seek strategies for helping their children achieve.
All parents and guardians of current students belong to the Kingsbury Day School Parents Association. Our active Parents Association meets monthly throughout the school year. Through a network of officers, event chairpersons, and volunteers, the Parents Association sponsors numerous projects and events that support and extend the school's academic and social life. In the fall, back-to-school receptions, the book fair and potluck dinners bring the parents together to meet teachers and staff, acquaint themselves with their children's classroom work, get to know one another, and further Kingsbury's literacy goals.
Several fund-raisers, including the sale of Sally Foster gifts and gift wrap, are held to raise money for Parents Association events and to provide for an annual contribution towards books, playground equipment, art and musical supplies, school furniture, scholarships to the after-school enrichment program, the yearbook and other important needs of the school. In the spring, parents assist Kingsbury's development office with an auction or other fund-raiser, and field a lively and vibrant spring festival to which all of Kingsbury's students, staff, neighbors, and new and currently enrolled families are invited.
The children's artistic and musical accomplishments are showcased at an evening reception in the spring, and the year's events conclude with a teacher appreciation luncheon and a reception for parents of new students. Throughout the year, parents are invited to help out with classroom activities, and enter fully into the life of Kingsbury according to their own interests and skills.
