The Extended Day Program

The Extended Day Program is committed to providing students with a safe and stimulating recreational environment that extends beyond the confines of the traditional school day.

As an extension of the Kingsbury Day School Program, we are dedicated to supplying students with a quality social education that extends beyond the classroom and where they can explore and express themselves. The Extended Day Program consists of the After School Child Care Program (ASP), the Before Care Program, and the After School Enrichment Program (D.R.E.A.M.).

Participation in any of the programs requires parents to fill out the Kingsbury Day School After School Registration Form 2008-2009 in addition to the enrollment forms. This form lists valuable medical and emergency information that will be kept on file in the Extended Day offices.

The Extended Day Program is an academic and recreation based program. It offers age-appropriate activities that are designed to be physically and intellectually stimulating to students. The activities are designed using a team approach that includes input from the after school staff members, parents, and the students themselves. These activities include, but are not limited to, a variety of board games, arts and crafts, field trips, cooking, snacks, and outdoor activities. The academic component consists of a study hall period, which provides time for students to complete their homework and/or any daily assignments. This program is staffed by after school staff members, many of whom are assistant teachers in the classroom and can provide students with the necessary guidance and supervision to complete their assignments. These teachers are also in contact with the classroom teachers if additional support is needed.

All staff members have experience working with students with learning differences or are interested in a career or studies in a related field. This qualification gives the children a strong and understanding support system during study halls and reading circles; as well as provides them with teachers who can give appropriate guidance during a variety of social conditions.

This program offers a flexible pick-up time for your child after the end of the school day. It runs from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm every day except Wednesday. Due to the early dismissal every Wednesday, the hours of operation are 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm. These programs are offered as an extension of the Kingsbury Day School and are available every day that school is in session. Click on the After School Program Calendar for days of operation and Weather Cancellation and Closure Policies. This Program is not open on Federal holidays and Winter Break.

Before Care Program

The principal goal of Kingsbury’s Before Care program is to provide care for students as well as create a positive and enriching environment that will assist students with the transition into their daily academic program. Under the supervision of an Extended Day staff member, this program provides students with a quiet time in which to independently choose and engage in a variety of activities to “jump-start” their day. They are encouraged to participate in a number of activities that include but are not limited to arts and crafts, puzzles, reading, drawing or simply socializing with friends. This program is also historically staffed by a teacher of the Kingsbury Day School Program. This affords students the opportunity to be greeted in the morning by a familiar face. This familiarity with a child and his/her individual social needs aids in creating a positive and caring environment in which to ease in into the regular school day.

This program offers a flexible drop-off time for your child at the beginning of the school day. It runs from 7:30 am to 8:15 pm for the Lower School Program and 7:30 am to 8:05 am for the Middle and Upper School Programs. These programs are offered as an extension of the Kingsbury Day School and are available every day that school is in session. This Program is not open on Federal holidays, Winter Break, and Spring Break.

After School Childcare Program

In the After School Child Care Program (ASP), children are encouraged to start a new, self-created day after 3pm. They are guided in creating an enjoyable social environment where they can engage in a variety of recreational activities, which include, but are not limited, to playground activities, organized outdoor activities, basketball, four square, soccer, arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, computer games and/or board games. Even though we are primarily a recreational program, as an extension of the Day School program we assist students in actively and independently taking charge of their academic development by promoting and facilitating good study habits in our study hall program. Students have the opportunity to complete their daily homework assignments assisted and supported by staff familiar with their learning differences and styles. Midway through the afternoon, all students are offered a healthy and nutritious snack and on cooking days students create their own snacks.

The main portion of our program is conducted in the multipurpose room and the playground/field area, which is on-site. However, Kingsbury occasionally uses several different surrounding venues including the two surrounding public parks - Carter Baron and Hamilton Park. The program also has access to three fully equipped computer labs for recreation, research, and projects that are school related.

After School Enrichment Program

Kingsbury’s After School Enrichment Program (DREAM), which stands for Discovering Rewarding and Enriching Activities just for Me, encourages students to find purposeful activities that are designed with their learning difference in mind, which they find exciting and enjoyable. We provide students with a safe, relaxed, non-judgmental social environment in which to explore a variety of new interests, improve established skills, and/or expose students to learning opportunities especially developed for them, that they would not normally have in the regular school day. It is created to enhance and complement the total learning experience that the students receive at Kingsbury Day School and provide parents with a time-saving, convenient, and rewarding social opportunity for their children.

This program is separate from the after school child care program and therefore is open to all students in the Kingsbury Day School Program through a separate registration form. Due to the specialty nature of these courses, these programs incur a separate charge. At the beginning of each semester, this program provides students with a variety of courses to choose from that may interest them. These courses can be academically or recreationally based dependent upon student interest and/or needs. Some examples of some courses held in the past are karate, wall climbing, tutoring club, drama, hand drumming, anime art class, sculpture, swimming, girls social group, lacrosse, basketball, flag football, and yoga. The classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis and must have a minimum enrollment of six students unless otherwise specified. Kingsbury reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment at which time refunds will be issued for any payments submitted. Classes will not be prorated due to absences or sickness and cancelled classes will be made up at another date. Parents will receive emails prior to confirmation about classes and room assignments before the start of each program. The schedules will also be displayed on the white board, which is placed in the front lobby.

This program is staffed by teachers and related service personnel involved with the Kingsbury Day School Program who understand the learning differences our students may possess and tailor their programs to fit the student’s specific needs. Professionals outside the Kingsbury community are also recruited to increase the variety and satisfy the interest demonstrated by the students and parents.

This program is offered once a week for 8- to 10-week course sessions. It occurs during the after school time frame. These programs are offered as an extension of the Kingsbury Day School and detailed schedules are released in compliance with the school calendars. These programs do not run on Federal holidays, Winter Break, and Spring Break.
