About Tutoring Services

Kingsbury provides tutoring services to children, adolescents, and adults throughout the Washington metropolitan area. Our tutors use a technique called diagnostic prescriptive teaching to design lessons to the specific and unique learning needs of each student, frequently assessing progress and adapting future lessons to promote continued success

Types of Tutoring
Kingsbury tutors are trained to work both with students who need extra help in a particular subject area as well as students who have specific learning disabilities, including dyslexia, auditory or visual processing difficulties, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, memory difficulties, and attention disorders.

Kingsbury also offers the following types of tutoring services:
Remedial tutoring for students with learning disabilities, reading and spelling difficulties, delays with math or trouble with written language.
Subject Tutoring - Kingsbury tutors include individuals with expertise in every major academic subject area, from elementary school through high school and beyond.
School Support - Our tutors can provide support for those students who need help in specialty areas such as keyboarding, organizational strategies and study skills.
Test Preparation - Kingsbury tutors offer help in acquiring test-taking skills for standardized exams, including SSAT, SAT, GED, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, ACT, Terra Nova, and GMAT.

The Tutoring Plan
Using test results and interviews with parents, teachers and the student, Kingsbury tutors formulate a tutoring plan specific to each student. The tutoring plan describes the student's learning style, defines the skills that the student and tutor will work to develop, sets forth preliminary strategies for tutoring, and identifies the instructional methods and materials to be used. In general, students require a minimum of two tutoring sessions per week for adequate mastery of skills. Lessons are designed to build on the student's strengths and interests so that students experience learning as exciting, meaningful, and satisfying. As the student progresses, the tutoring plan is adapted to accommodate growth and mastery.

A Coordinated Effort
Tutoring is most effective when there is open communication between the tutor and the student's family and teachers. Our tutors welcome discussion with teachers and parents, and they value their input. Coordination with the student's teacher allows the tutor to review concepts presented in the classroom and to reinforce skills needed for future achievement.

Location
Kingsbury tutors are available throughout the Washington metropolitan area. You and your tutor will choose the location that is best. Tutoring may take place in the tutor's home, at Kingsbury’s main facility on 14th Street in Washington, D.C., or at our Northern Virginia Tutoring office in Fairfax, Virginia. For an additional fee, the tutor might travel to the student's school, a public library, the student's home, or a mutually agreeable location. If tutoring is to take place at the student's school, parents are responsible for making the necessary arrangements with the school.
