Kingsbury Day School Admissions
At Kingsbury we pride ourselves on being the premier school in the Washington, D.C. area for children with learning differences. Several things set us apart, and they all grow from our child-first philosophy.
Learning at Kingsbury begins with the child—with his or her goals, interests, strengths and challenges. We don't ask students to conform to a particular style of learning; instead, we figure how they can best learn and tailor our instruction accordingly. Ongoing assessments help us measure growth, find out what’s working and what’s not, and enable us to modify learning strategies as needs arise.
Some schools look at a student through the lens of that child's deficits. This can undermine confidence and erode self-esteem. At Kingsbury, we accept, respect and celebrate students for who they are. We’re aware of how students may struggle, but our first focus is on strengths. As students develop those strengths, they gain confidence, and become better able to tackle challenges in other areas. Along the way they learn important lessons about determination, resilience and perseverance—qualities that will serve them very well when they leave Kingsbury. Ultimately that is our goal—to prepare Kingsbury students for success and fulfillment in the years beyond Kingsbury.
We use the resources at our disposal to help our students learn, no matter their weaknesses. Those resources are substantial. We offer small classes and customized learning tailored to each student’s needs. All learning strategies are grounded in research, and teachers are certified in the methods they use. Abundant technological resources for reading, writing, math and other skills help level the playing field. Art and music enrich learning. Our full-fledged sports program, which begins in the Lower School, builds self-esteem, improves fitness, and develops crossover skills in areas such as problem solving and leadership. Finally, our in-house, on-site diagnostic, psychological and therapeutic services are available to support student learning.
We invite you to attend one of our Open Houses, schedule an interview or tour, or email me with any questions you might have. Kingsbury can work magic in a young person’s life, and I’d love to tell you more about it.
